WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?, Produced by Dough Chapin and Barry Krost (1993)
Starring: Angela Bassett, Laurence Fishburne, Jenifer Lewis, Chi McBride, and Richard T. Jones
The true-life story of Tina Turner (born Anna Mae Bullock), What’s Love Got To Do With It? shows how Tina Turner rose from an unhappy childhood to a performer in Ike Turner’s band, singing with him onstage and becoming a musical power couple. The story doesn’t end there, however, as the story also shows Ike’s increasing substance abuse and his abuse, violence, control and domination over Tina during the course of their marriage. By taking steps to defend herself, Tina gradually discovers her own dreams, maintains her name, divorces Ike Turner, and become a solo artist, despite attempts from Ike to reunite.
Judge: I want you to be very sure about this. This means you’re going to walk out of here with absolutely nothing.
Tina: Except my name. I’ll give up all that other stuff, but only if I get to keep my name. I’ve worked too hard for it, your honor.
Ike, Sr.: The name is mine. The name got my daddy’s blood on it. If she want to go, she can go wherever she want to go, but the name stays home!
